Choosing a House Color

I don't know why, but this has been such a hard decision for me.  Originally I was really leaning towards a nice sage green but as time as gone on my mind has changed and now I'm leaning for something darker.  The more I see houses painted darker shades, the more I like it.  I think it would really change the look of our house and help give it a little more modern update.  So last weekend I decided it was time to start nailing down a color and off to the store I went to pick up some samples.  I picked three and here is where we are.

I feel like these pictures don't really do the colors justice.  To me each color is a little bit more subdued looking in real life and not as vibrant.  As you can see I was really excited about checking out the colors so I just did one quick coat, another coat will definitely darken up the colors some.  The color choices are as follows:  Stone, Sharkskin & Kendall Charcoal (all Benjamin Moore).

This picture gives a little bit better idea of what the colors are actually looking like.  We have two different sidings on our house (there was an addition at some point).  To be honest, I'm still not exactly sure what I like the best.  The new trim color will be white, I'm thinking white dove by Benjamin Moore so bye bye to ugly mustard gold trim.  I'm pretty sure the shutters will be black (we are thinking of getting all new shutters but we have got a lot to do before we get there).

So here we are, I thought maybe looking at the colors individually might help me in making a decision.

So tell me, what's your favorite??

  1. I'm really lovin' the dark gray. That's the color siding we choose for our house and I love it. In a world full of tan houses it's nice to see a change. I think the gray would really help it stand out! Be sure to let us know the color you choose!

  2. If you are thinking black shutters, maybe put something black up to each color to see how the contrast would look...............

  3. I like both the gray ones. With the white trim I think the darker one. But what do I know you had to pick out my colors for me a few years ago. And I still like it.

    1. I like the darker gray over the lighter...I just can't get rid of the green one yet. Justin definitely likes the dark gray the best.

Hands-down, without a doubt the Kendall Charcoal. I've seen your house. I know your house. It's told me it wants to be this color with white trim. Maybe even shutter-less with a bright celery green door. ;) Seriously, all joking aside, THE DARK CHARCOAL.

    That is all. :)

Just curious, what made you choose all Benjamin Moore colors instead of the usual Olympic or Valspar?

    1. So I think Kendall Charcoal is where we are leaning - its definitely Justin's favorite. I have thought about going shutterless but our windows are not very large, I feel like we need the shutters. I went with BM because I saw that sharkskin color on a house and loved it and then while I was there I decided to pick out a couple more, there was really nothing much behind it haha! The sharkskin looks so different on our house though, I think I just loved it so much on the other house that I thought I would love it on ours, so I'm having a hard time letting it go lol!

  6. I like the grey/blue tone. You might get tired of purple quickly, it seems too trendy and feminine. Green is nice, but that's a dark shade of green. It looks woodsy, but if that is the look you are going for, go for it.

  7. I like the dark gray for white trim, but if you're doing black shutters then probably the lighter gray would be better. Or the dark gray with different shutters, maybe a shade of green?

  8. That decision would be nearly impossible for me ... it seems like such a commitment. I've always been so glad that my husband chose our (awesome) house colors before we met :). I really like the bottom two colors -- both are so gorgeous.

  12. I painted my house a very similar green. Liked it for about 6 months now I am sick of it. I can't seem to find a door color to go with it. I have tried about 4 shades of red :( Anyway, I like the dark gray the best, but the black shutters would look great with the lighter gray. I think putting a black shutter against both choices would make your decision easier! Oh, and if you have a different door color in mind, look at all the colors together to make sure they are a good fit!

  13. The lighter grey all the way! Will pop nicely with the white trim and show off your black shutters nicely too. I think your black shutters will blend into the dark grey. Good luch!!

Have you checked Martha Stewart colors at Home Depot, by chance? I have found she has some great colors, and I would think she'd have some good grays to choose from, too (based on her style). Plus, she has those awesome symbols on the colors so you know what all goes together (match up the symbols)....so that might help eventually with choosing a door color? Just tossing that idea out there...
